1. IBM Glossary
AIX has lots of bizarre terms with which many newcomers are unfamiliar. Sometimes I forget what they are so here's a glossary. Feel free to add to this list, but please try to keep them in alphabetical order.
NB: IBM also has an
AIX Glossary, which is more thorough but less succinct.

| APAR | Authorized program analysis report. - A system patch | |
| BOS | Base Operating System | Minimal OS installation, w/o add-on packages and such |
| CKD | Count-Key-Data | DASD Type |
| FBA | Fixed-Block Architecture | DASD Type |
| DASD | Direct Access Storage Device | Harddrives, generally (excludes tapes, I think) |
| IPL | Initial Program Load(er) | Otherwise known as booting |
| LP | Logical Partition | Partition within a Logical Volume |
| LPAR | Logical PARtition | Not to be confused with an LP, which is storage-oriented, an LPAR is a virtual system partition, used for running multiple OSes on a single machine. |
| LPP | Licensed Program Package | Software packages, like RPMs or PKGs |
| LV | Logical Volume | |
| PP | Physical Partition | |
| RTE | Run-Time Environment | |
| VG | Volume Group |
